NWT’s Thanksgiving pick by: CELLERSCAPAFONS-OSSO
“Sirsell,” the Catalan word for a grapevine tendril, is a smooth, single-vineyard Priorat wine produced from Capafons-Ossó’s Mas de l’Amoros property. The grape varieties grown in the vineyard, whose name translates as “Lovers’ Lane,” are Garnacha, Cariñena, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Located at an elevation of 430 meters above sea level, Capafons-Ossó’s Mas de l’Amoros vineyard is grown organically and the vines are planted in the traditional head-pruned method, where they are trained very close to the ground in order to decrease production. With very tight spacing and no irrigation, the stressed vines ensure great grape quality with very high natural concentration. Possessing a dark ruby color with aromas of ripe blackberries, Mediterranean herbs and sweet spice, this wine is lively and fruit-forward on the palate, with mature tannins and a very long finish. A family with a history of winemaking in Priorat that stretches back over five generations, the Capafons team considers their vineyards to be “natural laboratories” and strive to maintain a delicate equilibrium between their land and nature from vintage to vintage.
Blend: 55% Garnacha pais, 30% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cariñena
MAS DE MASOS
Mas de Masos is a wine of exceptional quality produced from the 100 year-old, extremely low-yielding vineyard of the same name. Located at an elevation 350-650 meters above sea level, the Mas de Masos vineyard forms a natural amphitheater that protects it from dry winds and the harsh midday sun. This organically-farmed property contains several different microclimates that produce a 30-day difference between harvest of the lowest and highest vineyard sites and the yield of the old-vine Garnacha and Cariñena is so low that it often takes 3-4 vines to make one bottle of wine. A unique blend of old-vine Spanish varieties with younger French vines, this wine has intriguing aromas of ripe forest berries, lavender, anise seed and cedar. On the palate, it is dense and sultry with round tannins and nuances of toasted almonds, sweet spice, blackberry jam. A family with a history of winemaking in Priorat that stretches back over five generations, the Capafons team considers their vineyards to be “natural laboratories” and strive to maintain a delicate equilibrium between their land and nature from vintage to vintage.
Blend: 55% old-vine Garnacha, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cariñena, 5% Syrah
MASOS D’EN CUBELLS
Located at 400 meters above sea level, the Masos d’en Cubells vineyard is located at the highest elevation portion of the Capafons-Ossó property. Because a balance between the natural flora and a vineyard is very important to the Capafons family, while the entire estate comprises 60 hectares, only 14 are planted with vines. The old-vine Garnacha and Cariñena grown on this property are usually head-pruned and grown on steep, rocky slopes, while the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah are grown on a trellis system that is held up by the same extremely rocky soil, known locally as llicorella, or slate. The wine Masos d’en Cubells is a proprietary blend produced from five different grape varieties: Garnacha, Cariñena, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. These varieties hail from 20-60 year old vines that are interspersed with native aromatic herbs such as lavender, fennel and thyme. Rich in velvety dark fruit and soft oak, this wine also exhibits nuances of Mediterranean herbs and wild flowers.
Blend: 30% old-vine Garnacha, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cariñena, 10% Merlot, 10% Syrah
