Bodegas Murua is located on a small hill just outside the famous town of Elciego and is an ideal location for a wine tour as it boasts a breath-taking winery, an impressive wine library and an exceptional art collection. One can say that a tour of Murua is a true tour of the senses, which is all thanks to the Masaveu family that purchased and refurbished the winery in 1974.
The tradition of winemaking within the Masaveu family goes back to the times of Federico Masaveu Ripoll, who in the mid-nineteenth century built his own winery in Castellar del Vallès (Barcelona), where the family is originally from. One century later, the ancestors of Mr. Masaveu Ripoll decided to revive the family’s passion for winemaking and thus purchased Bodegas Murua, in the town of Elciego, which is dedicated, and historically linked, to vine growing as well as being home to many award-winning wineries. Indeed, due to the extremely high quality of wines produced in Elciego, many consider it to be one of the most famed winemaking regions in all of Rioja.
Since its beginning, Murua has endeavoured to produce premium quality wines and the winery’s beautiful installations were built with this in mind – all grapes are harvested by hand and the elaboration and ageing of the wines are performed in optimum conditions. Almost all of Murua’s wines are aged Reservas and Grandes Reservas and hail from their 110 hectares of estate-owned vineyards, many of which are over 60 years old. It is with these older vines that Murua makes classical and elegant wines which express the personality and spirit of their land to perfection.
While on a tour of Bodegas Murua, you will be able to stroll through their 60 year-old vineyards, dine in their private dining room, view their impressive art collection and taste wines directly from the barrel and bottle – a true tour of the senses for those that appreciate the grand things in life.
