Wine tours

Discover Spanish regions
through their wines

The best way to discover a Spanish region is through their wines.  Travel & Wine offers day tours from Madrid, Bilbao and Barcelona. Your own private chauffeur and a guide/translater who will be at your disposal throughout the day, most of the tours include 2 to 3 private winery visits including tastings. The wineries chosen for you are boutique with a score of at least 90 points. Within the family owned wineries you will get to meet the owners and be able to share their philosophy of life and devotion for their wines. Lunch is also included if you so wish, picnic in the vineyard or at the winery or maybe you prefer a local hotspot? No problem at all, tell me what you require and I will make it happen!

D.O. El Penedes

The D.O Penedes is the closest wine region from Barcelona / Sitges, known for its white and sparkling wines also called “cavas” the equivalent of Champagne. In this region you will find the three star grape varieties used to make Cava: Macabeu, Parellada, and Xarello. Aside from white grape varieties, this wine region is also beginning to create some remarkable red wines.

The D.O.Ca Rioja is probably the oldest and the best known winemaking region in Spain. This wine region has been a model region, constantly modernising itself and adapting to the demands of modern times.

Among quality wine regions, the Rioja brand is one of the five most widely-recognised across the world. Both their red and white are unquestionably astounding.

4 Days Wine Routes

You want to visit a wine region for more than one day, and maybe want to make the most of it and visit two regions during your same trip? This is very simple to combine the D.O Ribera del Duero with D.OCa Rioja and D.O Penedes with the D.O.Q Priorat. Or perhaps you want to visit more of Bordeaux and combine the city, the Médoc and of course not to be missed St Emilion? You want to stay longer in each wine region? No problem, you only have to let me know!

Bordeaux

Bordeaux

I would have three words to charactherize Bordeaux: Architecture , Wine and Food.

Located on the Garonne river in Southwestern France is the sixth-largest in France and it has it all! On that tour you will have the possibility to see the beautiful architecture that Bordeaux has to offer. After Paris, Bordeaux has the highest number of preserved historical buildings of any city in France. The historic part of the city is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. One of the best way to discover the city is driving a typicall french car such as a 2CV, a lot of fun and laughter garanted! Also not to be missed “ La Cité du Vin” one of the most complete wine museum I have been to. Being at the center of a major wine-growing and wine-producing region, Bordeaux remains a prominent powerhouse and exercises significant influence on the world wine industry.  From Bordeaux we will go to do some wine tastings in the Medoc and St Emilion wine regions:

Médoc

The Médoc is a 80 km long and 10 km wide wine region. The vineyards are mostly used for the growing of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. Médoc has four of the most reputable wine villages in the world: Margaux, Saint-Julien, Saint- Estephe and Pauillac, some of the world’s most expensive wines are made in those villages. The Médoc region is divided into three sections: the Landes du Medoc, the Bas-Médoc and the Haut-Médoc. Practically no grapes grow in the Landes du Médoc but the pine trees that grow there protect the vineyards from the cold. The wines made in the Bas-Médoc are slightly less prestigious than the wines from Haut-Médoc, but they are still considered high quality wines. The Haut-Médoc is were the best Médoc wines are produced, there is no other place in the world were as much high quality wine is produced per acre as in Haut-Médoc.

Saint-Emilion

The town of Saint Emilion used to be very wealthy in the Middle Ages surrounded by vineyards and wineries, the wine district only produces red wines, mostly with Merlo’s varieties.

Ribera del Duero / Rioja

This tour can be organized from Madrid and from Barcelona. It includes three winery visits & tastings a day, a private driver, a private guide/translator who will make sure that you won’t miss a thing and not only learn about the wine but also about the cultur of each region. The lunches are usually at the wineries or at a local hotspot.

Travel & Wine will also take care of your accomodations, such as boutique hotels, castle, old reformed convents, the choice is yours!

La Rioja is one of the oldest wine region in Spain ( Four hours from Barcelona and three hours from Ribera del Duero) this wine region is divided into three parts: Rioja Alavesa, in the north, Rioja Alta in the northwest and Rioja Oriental in the east. All wines that are produced in La Rioja have the “denominación de origen calificada” (DOC) label, this means that the wine must obtain a certain level of quality and the grapes that are used to make the wine must come from La Rioja, with an exception for grapes from Navarra and the Basque Country. Rioja wines were the first wines to receive this label. The DOC label is the highest status wines can have in Spain, as of right now only the wine regions Rioja and Priorat have received this label. La Rioja is mostly famous for its red wines, only 10% of the production is dedicated to white wine and rosé. For most of the Rioja-red wines the Tempranillo grape is used.

If you arrive in Madrid the best way to start your tour is to drive to D.O Ribera del Duero a wine region known for producing some of the best Tempranillo based wines in the world.

Penedés / Priorat

If you are staying in Barcelona or Sitges, the D.O Penedes and the D.O.Q Priorat are the two wine regions you can’t miss!

The D.O Q Priorat is famous for its deep mineral red wines however it also produces white wines and is one of the two wine regions in Spain which has the DOC label, alongside Rioja. This is the highest label that wines can get in Spain. Priorat stands out from other wine regions  because of  its soil: llicorella ( Slate). By its mineral it gives the wine a unique taste. The D.O Penedes is mostly known for its cava’s (sparkling wine), but the red wines from Penedès are becoming more and more popular as well. Penedès has the “denominación de origen (DO)” label, this means that the wines that are produced in the Penedès region must be of a certain quality and the grapes that are used in the wines must be from Penedès.
